An alternator is a compact, belt driven generator connected to the engine which transforms mechanical power into electrical power. The electrical power is then used to recharge the battery. It also powers many onboard systems. As the engine RPM's increase, the alternator produces more power. The alternator typically charges the cranking battery, starting the engine & powering critical systems. Depending on the boat, the cranking battery can also charge the house batteries, bringing power to other recreational devices.
